AIR TESTING - Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) We can carry out these measurements by taking personal samples in the breathing zone of operators, and possibly static background samples. Depending on the circumstances, we collect samples using either a pumped adsorption tube or passive diffusive tubes. The absorption tube method is carried out in accordance with MDHS 96 "Volatile organic compounds in air.", while the diffusive tube method follows the basic principles of MDHS 80 "Volatile organic compounds in air". In both cases the tubes are ananlysed in a UKAS accredited laboratory where they are desorbed and specific organic compounds are quantified using gas chromatography. Results are compared to Occupational Exposure Limits (WEL's) given in HSE Guidance Note EH40. The detection limit for these methods is typically <0.1mg/m3. Air sampling to determine levels of contaminants, can be carried out at the same time as LEV performance testing, to ensure that levels are being maintained below Occupational Exposure Limits. |
