AIR TESTING - Particulates
We test for total or respirable particulates by taking static or personal samples in the breathing zone of operators. When respirable particulates are determined, a cyclone is used to differentiate respirable sized particles (<10µm).
The tests are carried out in accordance with HSE MDHS 14/3 "General methods for the gravimetric determination of respirable and total dust". Results are compared to Occupational Exposure Limits (WEL's) given in HSE Guidance Note EH40.
We also use a direct reading laser dust meter to measure total dust concentrations in the atmosphere. This enables any leaks or 'hot spots' to be identified and remedial actions taken. It is also useful to show dust levels to employees to demonstrate the need for protective equipment.
Air sampling to determine levels of contaminants, can usefully be carried out at the same time as LEV performance testing, to ensure that levels are being maintained below Occupational Exposure Limits.
